_____________________
Donta Johnson has over 25 years of playing experience and 15 years of coaching experience on a variety of different levels (high school coaching, AAU, travel, and church and PAL leagues). As a former professional basketball player with the Connecticut Pride (CBA/IBL) and Springfield Slamm (EBA). Donta had the opportunity to travel overseas and play as well. At Springfield College, Donta was a two year captain of the team and was selected as an All-American player. He earned Conference Player of the Year, was a three time All-Conference performer and received the New England’s Basketball Unsung Hero Award. Donta Johnson led Springfield Collge in assists in each of the four seasons he played and scored more than 1300 points in his career. In the classroom Donta received a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and Casework and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Counseling.
As a high school athlete Donta’s accolades included All-State, All-County, All-Section and All League honors in both basketball and football in New York. He received the most prestigious award in the county for his academic and athletic achievements “Con Edison Award.” Most recently Donta was Inducted into his high schools Hall of Fame.
Donta has been coaching the Middlesex Rage AAU team for the past two years. In his first season the Rage had a record of 17-8. He also coached the Cromwell Travel team and led them to a 16-8 record. Over the past few years Donta Johnson has trained or coached players that have gone on to compete at the high and low Division I level. Willie Shaw (St. John’s University who played for Mike Jarvis ), Antoine Johnson (Villanova Univesity Big East Champion in the hurdles ), Jamal Webb (Wagner College, member of the team) , Francis Boone (Colgate, member of the Women’s team ) and others that have gone on to play at Division II and III colleges. These individuals know that being consistent and having a great work ethic afforded them great opportunititesas as they all received full sholarships to their respected colleges and universities. My only advice to them was to stay focus, strive for consistency and enjoy the sport.
